Alumni spotlight: Nursing graduate finds support, success through Center for New Directions

Caitlyn Keelin’s journey to nursing wasn’t a straight line. She became a mother at 15 and later earned her GED in Wyoming. Years later, while working full time in a call center and raising four children, she decided to pursue her dream of becoming a nurse. She enrolled at CEI, earned her Associate of Science degree in 2022, and entered the nursing program that same year.

The Center for New Directions was a crucial support system, helping with childcare, books, scrubs, food, and gas. This allowed her to focus on school and complete her education without student loans.

Caitlyn graduated in December 2024 and began working night shifts on the Progressive Care Unit at Portneuf Medical Center, where she cares for cardiac and high‑needs patients. Her kids proudly tell everyone, “My mom’s a nurse.”

Apprenticeship program hits record high at CEI

At a time when the skilled workforce is experiencing shortages, CEI is reporting encouraging news for employers. CEI’s apprenticeship programs, spanning electrical, plumbing, and HVAC, enrolled a record 625 students, marking the third consecutive year of growth.

The programs’ success is attributed in part to the quality of its instructors. Many own their own businesses or bring years of experience to the classroom. Their real-world knowledge provides students with invaluable insight and practical application.

To meet growing demand, CEI added a spring cohort for electrical and HVAC apprenticeships. The college is also exploring additional start dates and hybrid learning options to expand access to educational opportunities.
